smartEX Service
The smartEX basic service lets you make a reservation up to your date of travel and combines the validity of the basic fare ticket and limited express ticket for the Tokaido Sanyo Kyushu Shinkansen lines. There are options for Ordinary Car reserved seats, Green Cars (First Class Cars), and Ordinary Car non-reserved seats.

This product is exclusively for Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen.
- The ticket and the limited express ticket are combined in one ticket.
- QR tickets or IC cards can be used for boarding.

Available for Purchase
From 5:30 am 1 year prior to boarding date, up to 4 minutes before the departure time shown in the timetable.
Tickets are available for purchase 24 hours a day.
- Excluding during system maintenance.
- There is a limit to number of the seats that can be reserved.
- Payment will be made at the time of reservation.
- One year in advance, you can select your desired train from the tentative train service schedule, and we will confirm the train, time, and seats after 8:00 a.m. one month prior to your boarding date, and notify you to your registered e-mail address.
- Seat maps are not available between 11:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. the next day.You will be notified of your confirmed seat at 5:30 a.m. the following day to your registered e-mail address.

- In the event that you are late for boarding your reserved train, you may board a Shinkansen leaving later on the same date, using a non-reserved seat in an Ordinary Car.
- When connecting to a Shinkansen train, you may take up to three trains, but all three trains must be the same equipment.
However, if you are using a reserved seat in a Reserved seat or a Green Car, and a part of the connecting train is full, or if the train is not connected to a standard car or a Green Car, the ticket may be sold in different facilities for the section in question.

- A maximum of 3 people can be reserved in one reservation between 11:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. the next day.

Reservation Change
Before entering the ticket gate with the QR code or IC card, or before receiving your ticket, and before the departure time of the reserved train. You can change your reservation as many times as you wish without any charge.
The train can be changed up to 4 minutes before the departure time of the train.
(This must be within 3 months of the original purchase date.)

Others
- No stopovers are allowed. If you get off at a stop along the way, the section you did not ride will become invalid and you will not be allowed to ride again.
- This discount cannot be used in conjunction with other discounts.
- This ticket is a combination of a train ticket and an express ticket. If you take a conventional train to or from the Shinkansen boarding station, you will need to pay the fare for the conventional train separately.
- When connecting a conventional train to the Shinkansen, the total amount of "Smart EX Service and conventional train fare" may be higher than the "prescribed ticket (without discount)" depending on the section of use.

The price of "Ordinary Car, reserved seat" varies depending on the season (regular season, off-peak season, peak season, and the top season*).
For one adult, the price is 200 yen lower than that of regular season during off-peak season, 200 yen more expensive during peak season than regular season, 400 yen more expensive during high-peak season than regular season.In the case that the boarding section straddles the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen lines, for one adult, the price is 400 yen lower than that of the regular season during off-peak season, 400 yen more expensive during peak season than regular season, 800 yen more expensive during high-peak season than regular season.

Sales prices for the Ordinary Car reserved seat and Green Car (First Class Car) options differ based on whether you are using "Nozomi" and "Mizuho" trains or "Hikari", "Sakura", "Kodama", and "Tsubame" trains.
- If you use only the section between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo, the fare of "Mizuho", "Sakura" and "Tsubame" are the same.
Refund
- You can refund your reservation by yourself before entering the Shinkansen ticket gate using the QR code or IC card, or before receiving your ticket.
- After the departure time of the reserved train, refunds cannot be made on yourself. Refunds will be made automatically on or after the day following the boarding date after the following specified amount (refund fee) is collected.

- If you have already received the ticket, you cannot refund it by yourself. Please bring the ticket and the credit card used for payment to the main station counter of JR Tokai, JR West, or JR Kyushu by the day of boarding to complete the refund procedure. In this case, the refund fee is the same as the refund made by the customer himself / herself.
