Boarding with an IC card

A member using the service by himself/herself can board the Shinkansen using a registered IC card.

Applies to a reservation that is displayed as "Ticketless" on the "Reservation Complete" screen.

IC card When boarding directly from Shinkansen station

When using an IC crd to board the Shinkansen, "Seat Infromation" will be issued from the Shinkansen ticket gate. Make sure to pick it up before boarding the train.

Shinkansen station

Just touch your IC card to the ticket gate and board the Shinkansen.

  • A payment for the Shinkansen fare will be made from your registered credit card when making a reservation (not deducted from the balance of your IC card).

Entering from a conventional line

When entering from conventional line ticket gate, such as Tokyo Station's Marunouchi entrance, touch your IC card to both conventional line and Shinkansen ticket gate.

Enter through the ticket gate for conventional lines at the Shinkansen station where you are boarding
  • If you are just passing through the conventional line concourse, the fare will not be deducted from the balance of your IC card.
  • Note that the following IC card balance is required to pass through the conventional line concourse.

    • Suica area (all stations from Tokyo - Atami): at least the minimum boarding fare to at least the initial fare
    • TOICA Area (all stations from Mishima - Nagoya): no balance required
    • ICOCA Area (all stations from Maibara - Hiroshima/Asa): at least 1 Yen
    • SUGOCA Area (all stations from Kokura - Hakata): at least 10 Yen

When transferring between Shinkansen and conventional line

Touch your registered IC card at the ticket gate to board the trains (both conventional line and the Shinkansen).

  • The fare for the conventional line will be deducted from the balance of your IC card.
  • A payment for the Shinkansen fare will be made from your registered credit card when making a reservation (not deducted from the balance of your IC card).

First insert your conventional line ticket into the Shinkansen ticket gate, then touch your registered IC card.

Seat Information

Be sure to pick up "Seat Information" from the Shinkansen ticket gate.

  • You cannot use the "Seat Information" to enter/exit the ticket gate.
  • A train crew will check your Seat Information on the train.

If you are transferring trains, then details of the transfer trains will be listed. You can reserve up to 3 train transits.

  • Conventional line trains
  • Ticket
  • Shinkansen
  • IC card

Note

  • When using tickets or magnetic commuter pass with an IC card, insert the ticket or magnetic commuter pass before touching your IC card to the Shinkansen ticket gate.
  • You can't pass through the ticket gate with "Seat Information". Please do not insert it to the ticket gate.
  • If you have forgotten your IC card, pick up your "tickets" from JR Central or JR West ticket vending machine or ticket pick-up machine using a pick-up code. (See here regarding how to pick up tickets)
  • You cannot use your IC card to enter a ticket gate while reservations are in the process of being changed.
  • If the IC card used for conventional lines and the IC card to board the Shinkansen are different, you cannot use them together. Please pick up a ticket at ticket vending machine.
  • In some cases, your IC card may not respond if there is several IC card or card with an IC chip, such as IC license, is in your card wallet.
